Fantasy is absolutely one of my favourite genres, sword fights, sorcery, magical creatures, and fantastical lands all make for brilliant reading!
But even better are those books with a strong female character at the centre of the story, and even better still is when that fantasy story contains a lesbian romance at its heart.
But what could be better than lesbian books set in fantasy realms? FREE lesbian books set in fantasy realms!
That’s why I have collected together these five fantasy series all of which start with a free ebook download so that you can head out on your next epic quest and immerse yourself in a new world right now!Check out this list of Awesome #WLW Fantasy series' you can start for FREE #LesbianFiction #LesbianReads #WeNeedDiverseFiction Click To Tweet
All of these free ebooks are either the prequel to a trilogy or the start of a long-running chronicle. They are all either books with lesbian main characters or they have women-loving-women storylines between strong characters.
Many of these are LGBT YA books, however, some have darker themes, or contain a more mature lesbian scene. So be sure you check out the blurb and the reviews to make sure it is for you before you indiscriminately click on all the free downloads!
And remember authors, love reviews! So if you fall in love with these fantasy adventures, try and find a way to review the book or let others know it exists!
1. The Risen Queen
By M. H. Johnson
Where to start:
First Blood (The Risen Queen Book 0)
No knight can match her. No professor will pass her.
Jess has a warrior’s passion, a Druid’s gifts, and a professor planning her downfall. If she doesn’t act the proper lady, she will be sent home in disgrace. But when slavers bring misery and ruin to her homeland, she trades silk and lace for iron and steel. Expulsion is the least of her worries, with an entire fortress of enemy soldiers waiting to kill her.
If you like stories full of exotic magic, visceral combat, and a girl willing to take on all odds for the sake of her friends, then you’ll love this exciting new series, eight books in all!
2. When Women Were Warriors
By Catherine M. Wilson
When she was a child, the author happily identified with all the male heroes she read about in stories that began, “Once upon a time, a young man went out to seek his fortune.” But she would have been delighted to discover even one story like that with a female protagonist. Since she never did find the story she was looking for all those years ago, she decided to write it.
Where to start:
Book I: The Warrior’s Path
In Book I of the trilogy, Tamras arrives in Merin’s house to begin her apprenticeship as a warrior, but her small stature causes many, including Tamras herself, to doubt that she will ever become a competent swordswoman. To make matters worse, the Lady Merin assigns her the position of companion, little more than a personal servant, to a woman who came to Merin’s house, seemingly out of nowhere, the previous winter, and this stranger wants nothing to do with Tamras.
By Rae D. Magdon
Enter the magical land of Amendyr where there are evil step-mothers, ancient sorcerers, witches, kings, and even armies of the undead!
Where to start:
The Second Sister
ELEANOR OF SANDLEFORD’S entire world is shaken when her father marries the mysterious, reclusive Lady Kingsclere to gain her noble title.
Ripped away from the only home she has ever known, Ellie is forced to live at Baxstresse Manor with her two new stepsisters, Luciana and Belladonna. Luciana is sadistic, but Belladonna is the woman who truly haunts her.
When her father dies and her new stepmother goes suddenly mad, Ellie is cheated out of her inheritance and forced to become a servant. With the help of a shy maid, a friendly cook, a talking cat, and her mysterious second stepsister, Ellie must stop Luciana from using an ancient sorcerer’s chain to bewitch the handsome Prince Brendan and take over the entire kingdom of Seria.
In a city that never was, sex, scandal, and swordplay combine in a melodrama of manners that returns readers to the beloved world of Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint!
Swordplay, scandal, and sex—welcome to the world of Tremontaine, where ambition, love affairs, and rivalries dance with deadly results. This is a glittering new entry in Ellen Kushner’s classic Riverside series
Where to start:
Arrivals by Ellen Kushner
A Duchess whose beauty is matched only by her cunning; a passionate young Scholar with dreams beyond his reach; a Foreign spy in a playground of swordplay and secrets; and a Genius on the brink of scientific revolution—when long-buried lies threaten to come to light, the stakes are high, and more than lives may be lost. Mind your manners and enjoy the chocolate in a dance of sparkling wit and political intrigue.
Duchess Diane Tremontaine, the crowning gem of her city’s high class, sits in her manor’s window on The Hill and looks over her domain with eyes that cut and a mind that schemes. Far below, and far away from the glitz of wealth, a poor country farm girl named Micah looks only toward her family, the harvest, and the complex web of math that entrances her. At the Docks, the newly arrived Ixkaab Balam surveys the same city from the deck of her family’s merchant vessel and sees a land to manipulate for fortune and fun. And at the University, a passionate scholar named Rafe bristles at the classism constraining his ambitions and dreams of revolution.
5. The Dark Age Trilogy
by Niamh Murphy (That’s Me!)
For fans of Sarah J. Maas, Game of Thrones, and Skyrim comes a queer, epic fantasy set in a land of Dark Wizards and Warrior Queens…
Where to start:
The Gods will be Conquered.
A lover lost in battle. An offer she can’t refuse. A price she might not be able to pay.
When Andra, a Captain in the formidable Dragon Guard, sees her lover killed in a vicious wizard duel, a grizzled half-mage offers a chance to bring her back from the dead.
But the offer is not without a price.
Torn between her honour and her heart, Andra has until first light to obtain the life essence of a dragon she has sworn to protect or lose the woman she loves forever.
This is a short prequel story to the epic fantasy trilogy, Dark Age, set in a world of knights and magic, where dragons are worshipped as Gods. For lovers of Game of Thrones, Skyrim, and kick-ass women-warriors who battle dragons.
