Social media filters, silos, bubbles, or whatnot have been in the news quite a bit. But I’m not here today to discuss the negative aspects of social media.
Just the opposite.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved pirates! I used to bury treasure, draw a map, and then dig up what I’d buried, and at the time, it was so cool.
Setting aside my childhood memories, which make me laugh at myself, the Anne-Niamh connection is one of the reasons I love social media. If I hadn’t checked in on Anne’s site, I wouldn’t have found out about Escape to Pirate Island. (Psst… it’s my current read, and I’m loving it!)
I don’t spend countless hours on social media, and truth be told, I’m not very adept with hashtags, tagging people, gifs, and all the other neat things I see people do. I’m impressed when I can add an emoji.
That’s not the point, though. The purpose of social media is to be social. Oddly, its presence in today’s world is making people less friendly, or so it seems. There have always been haters. Anonymity, though, brings out the worst in some. Reading headlines about the impact of certain social media makes me ill sometimes. And I’m actually working on a novel about cyberbullying.
Yet, I don’t want to give up on social media. Via my first blog, 50 Year Project, I’ve made friends all over the world. I have an author’s website that’s recently launched. And I set up a site dedicated to lesbian fiction called I Heart Lesfic.
I may not be a whiz with social media, but what do you say? Would you like to connect? And if you’re curious about my lesbian romance novels, give A Woman Lost a go.
